Have You Thanked Plankton Today?

There’s a YouTube video that is already 10 years old titled Five Reasons to Thank Plankton. You can watch it below if you’d like, but we’ll list the five reasons right here, and we’re adding a sixth one!

Plankton = Breathing

Photosynthetic plankton produce as much oxygen as all the trees and plants on land combined. In other words: every second breath you take comes from the ocean, not the forest. On top of that, plankton absorb massive amounts of CO₂, quietly playing a crucial role in slowing climate change.

Thank you, plankton, for every second breath.

2. Plankton = Energy

Many people assume fossil fuels come mostly from trees and plants. But the vast majority of our oil and natural gas originated from plankton. Millions of years ago, enormous amounts of organic plankton material sank to the sea floor, where, under immense pressure and heat, it slowly transformed into what we now call energy.

Thank you, plankton, for powering the modern world (ironically enough!)

3. Plankton = Building Materials

The calcium-rich shells and skeletons of plankton (especially zooplankton) pile up on the seafloor over millions of years and become sedimentary rocks like chalk and limestone. These have been used to build iconic structures, from cathedrals to pyramids, and also form the raw material for cement, the essential binder in concrete.
So without plankton: no houses, no bridges, no sidewalks.

Thank you, plankton, for limestone and cement.

4. Plankton = The Food Chain

No plankton, no fish. No sushi, mussels, lobsters, or whales. Plankton forms the base of almost all ocean life. Photosynthetic phytoplankton feed zooplankton (like krill), which in turn feed everything else, from sardines to sharks. Even vegetarians benefit from a healthy ocean full of plankton, because without this foundation, the whole ecosystem would collapse.

Thank you, plankton, for fish sticks and all life in the oceans.

5. Plankton = Our Beginning

Plankton were the pioneers of complex life on Earth. These microscopic organisms have been drifting through the oceans for over 3 billion years. They were the first to develop photosynthesis, to extract energy from light, and they laid the groundwork for multicellular life.
Without this evolutionary breakthrough, no animals, no humans, no you.

Thank you, plankton, for kickstarting everything.

6. Plankton = Omega-3 EPA

One of the most studied fatty acids for heart, brain, and immune health is omega-3 EPA. While most people associate it with oily fish, that’s not the true source. The real origin? It’s plankton! Fish only contain EPA because they eat plankton. So if you want to skip the fish, you can go straight to the source.

Thank you, plankton, for omega-3 fatty acids.

We Are Plankton!

In the most literal sense of the word.
But you can always go one step further by taking plankton daily as a supplement.
Your brain will thank you!
